

Life After High School
Life After High School Round Table was developed by Redstick C.A.R.E.S. and is led by the Redstick Microacademy instructor. This class is collaborative and student-centered, designed to help students explore, research, and plan for their future beyond high school.
In this class, students will:

Brainstorm and discuss their goals, interests, and dreams

Research post-secondary options such as careers, trade schools, college, and workforce pathways

Compare and contrast different opportunities to find the best personal fit

Develop an understanding of the steps and skills needed to turn their goals into reality

Learning My Brain
Learning My Brain class is a specialized curriculum developed by Redstick C.A.R.E.S. to support students with ADHD, dyslexia, autism, and other learning challenges. This class is led by the Redstick Microacademy teacher and focuses on helping students better understand how they learn best.
Students will develop key executive functioning skills, including:

Self-reflection - noting improvements and continued challenges
In addition, students will:

Learn about metacognition (how their brain learns and processes information)

Monday Morning Planning
Start the week with intention. In this weekly class, students learn how to take ownership of their time by planning ahead and staying organized.
Students will use their phone calendars to:

Input and update academic, social, and personal responsibilities

Set reminders and alerts to stay on track

Edit and adjust schedules as plans change

Share events with peers, staff, or family when needed
This class builds essential life skills like time management, organization, independence, and accountability, helping students feel more prepared and confident heading into their week.

Learning Circles
During Learning Circle sessions, students participate in live instruction led by UVA instructors, engaging with high-quality academic content in a structured, supportive environment.
Students will:

Adulting 101
The Adulting 101 class is a practical, hands-on curriculum developed by Redstick C.A.R.E.S. and led by the Redstick Microacademy teacher. This class is designed to equip students with the essential life skills needed for independence and everyday success.
Students will learn and practice:

Financial literacy (budgeting, saving, spending, basic banking)

Basic cooking skills (meal planning, food prep, kitchen safety)

Home care and maintenance (cleaning, organization, basic upkeep)

Car care and maintenance (basic knowledge, safety, routine upkeep)
This class emphasizes real-world application, giving students opportunities to build confidence through hands-on learning and practical experiences.
Students leave with the foundational skills and confidence needed to navigate daily responsibilities and transition successfully into independent living.

Extended Learning
Extended Learning Opportunities are designed to expand learning beyond the classroom by aligning with student interests, goals, and real-world experiences. These opportunities are thoughtfully planned and organized by the Redstick Microacademy teacher to ensure meaningful, relevant engagement for every student.
Students will have opportunities to:

Participate in higher education campus tours

Explore virtual college visits outside of Baton Rouge

Engage in job shadowing experiences

Attend educational field trips connected to their interests
These experiences allow students to apply what they are learning in real-life settings, building confidence, independence, and decision-making skills.
